The next day, in the real world after school, Risa got ready to go home, then closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Kaede came running over.

“Risa, what’s up?”

“Thinking about swinging by a game shop on the way home.”

“Oh? Something new out?”

“No, not like that…”

Risa was being unusually evasive, and Kaede crooked her head.

“Would you…wanna come with?” Risa asked.

“……? Sure, why not?”

This didn’t seem like one of Risa’s attempts to get her into a new game. Wondering what was going on, Kaede joined her friend, and they headed out.

“Even I know the way by now!”

“Heh…well, it doesn’t hurt to see what they’ve got.”

“Ah-ha-ha. I always just end up looking. Hard to tell what’s good.”

“But that’s one way to have fun.”

The packages were designed to show off the games, and the backs had some descriptive text. Looking those over was enjoyable in its own right. Wandering around the shop, picking up anything that caught the eye—a perfect afternoon.

For that reason, Risa usually picked up speed as she got near the shop, but today she was actually slowing down.

“Are you doing okay?”

“Er, uh…yes.”

She sure didn’t look it. But when Kaede suggested they turn back, Risa insisted she was fine. That was worrying, but by now, they’d reached the game shop.

“What are you here for?”

“That’s the thing…,” Risa said, slowly advancing on a particular shelf.

“Huh?!”

Following her gaze, Kaede gasped. The packages and titles lined up there were all horror games.

“S-seriously?”

“Yeah. High time I got over it.”

Recent fights had left her cowering; she’d had to skip the entire sixth stratum, and even on other floors, she’d diligently avoided any spooky areas. It was a real detriment, and one she’d rather rid herself of.

“I can’t recommend it. You won’t be able to sleep!”

“Urgh…”

There was a big gap between a horror area in a regular game and what a dedicated horror game offered. It seemed unlikely that someone shredded by the first could handle the second. Kaede had known Risa a long time, had seen her make these declarations before, and knew they always ended in despair.

“If you insist, I won’t stop you, but…”

Given what had just happened on the seventh stratum, Maple figured this was doomed to failure. Risa dithered for a long moment, thoughts swirling, but finally made up her mind.

“I-I’m going for it! I’ve decided!”

“You pick a game yet?” Kaede asked.

Risa took one off the shelf.

“V-VR?! Are you sure?”

There was a big difference between that stuff happening on-screen and jumping right into that terrifying experience. Risa had backed herself into a corner, drunk on her own resolve, convinced it would work out—Kaede had seen all this before. But she also knew once Risa got like this, the only way to talk her down was to post results—good or bad.

“This one’s two-player…”

“Oh? Ohhh? You’re dragging me in?!”

“I—I plan to beat it solo! Just…um, you know.”

“Okay, fine! When’re we doing this?”

“Between NewWorld Online events!”

“Will we need that much time? The package even says it’s super scary.”

Kaede herself didn’t have any particular problems with horror, so she’d taken the box from Risa’s hands and was reading the back of it.
